Assam looks to Japan for technical aide amid earthquake fear; 21 aftershocks jolt state

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today instructed the senior government officials of the state to get in touch with countries such as Japan to install an ‘earthquake warning system’ in the state.

Chairing a meeting with senior government officials here, Sonowal urged them to create a mass awareness on how to coexist with earthquakes and disseminate necessary information through different media platforms.

Assam has been living in a fear of frequent earthquakes ever since it was struck by a massive quake yesterday.

As many as 21 aftershocks rattled the state after the 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Assam and Northeast at 7.51 am yesterday.

At least two people died of shock or heart attack, while 12 others received injuries due to the quake.

However, no casualty resulting due to earthquake injuries was reported from across the state.

On the other hand, 428 residential houses, 148 private and public institutions, besides other infrastructures such as roads, bridges and embankments were damaged in the state due to the impact of the quake.
