NALBARI: The family of a youth from Assam who went missing during the lockdown has nearly lost all hope as he has not contacted them in three months after he abruptly went 'missing.'

Hemanta Haloi, a 28-year-old youth brimming with life and energy, was one of the scores affected by the lockdown that dealt historic damage to the economy and livelihoods across India. Haloi wanted to leave his house to find work elsewhere but was prohibited from doing so as his wife was 6-months pregnant.

"Haloi, a lineman by profession, would often find work outside his district and was finding it difficult to find work. He was not satisfied with the little amount of money he was getting here," his sister revealed to the media.

On March 6, the youth told his family that he was leaving to fetch his wife from her parents’ house in a neighbouring village. However, he never reached his wife and has not been heard of since that day.

The family has lodged a missing persons’ complaint at the local police station. Moreover, they also tried to locate him via Facebook. But to no avail.

According to his elder sister, the youth had expressed interest in leaving Assam to find work as he was struggling to find employment amid the lockdown.

She said that they later found a bag containing his voter ID and other documents. "He probably wanted to take those with him but did not manage to do so."

On June 25, Dolly gave birth to the couple's child -- a daughter -- at the local hospital. This development has prompted the family of the youth to begin an initiative to seek him out. The district police as well as MLA Jayanta Mallah Baruah have been alerted about the plight of the family.

"We are requesting Hemanta to come back. For his infant daughter, if not for anyone else," the missing man's sister added.
