BONGAIGAON: With the magical touch of an artist, anything can be transformed into art.

Proving this very fact, an artist from Bongaigaon district of Assam has been carving a niche for himself with his incredible talent of wood carving.

Mamitabh Pathak (40) is keeping some famous people alive with his creativity that he has been honing since years.  Pathak transforms pieces of wood into portraits of famous personalities with the art of carving. Along with personalities, Pathak also carves various elements depicting Assamese culture.

Some of his widely appreciated creations include the carvings of legendary Bhupen Hazarika, APJ Abdul Kalam, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda, Atal Bihari Bajpayee, Swami Vivekananda etc.

This artist can be found amid his creations in the Chaparakata market of Bongaigaon district near the National highway.

Pathak uses bamboo, wood, tree branches as his canvass to explore his creativity and incorporate his imagination into the inanimate objects.

The word of his work has travelled beyond the state even reaching the neighbouring countries including Bhutan and Nepal. With his skills of carving and attention to intricacy, Pathak has been able to earn his bread and butter by selling his extraordinary creations to art lovers. His creations are priced from Rs 200  upto Rs 5000.

Pathak's tryst with this art form began way back in his childhood. Using ordinary tools like knives, dagger he has been carving several breathtaking pieces since a long time.

However, his journey has not been without hiccups.

Before the dawn of fame, this artist made his ends meet by running a battery repiaring shop. However, his failure in the business led him to juggle from one business to another. In the midst of all these, Pathak kept on working on his art on the side and the rest is history.

Apart from taking part in numerous exhibitions, the artist has been felicitated in many places across the state.
