JORHAT: A massive fire erupted in Upper Assam's Jorhat town earlier today around 6:00 AM while "Chhath Puja" celebrations were going on. This incident has been reported from Jorhat's Harijan Colony. According to preliminary investigations, at least 15 houses have been burnt down by the blaze.

Immediately after the fire broke out, fire tenders were rushed to the spot. However, due to the high intensity of the blaze, it could not be immediately doused.

Tenders were then brought in from neighboring Teok and the fire was eventually subdued after a long and arduous struggle by the firefighters. Members of the local administration -- including Deputy Commissioner Roshni Korati -- have reached the site of the fire.

"A great big disaster has been averted due to timely intervention. At least 30 families have been affected and primary assessment is going on," said Deputy Commissioner Roshni Korati, adding, "The people had gone out to celebrate Chhath Puja and hence, a lot many lives were saved. The fire was likely triggered by a charger light."

Korati informed that a lot of houses -- located adjacent to each other -- were burned down due to fire.

A local informed that at least 10 houses have been burned down. "3-4 cylinders also exploded. Thankfully, very few people were present as the residents had gone to the ghaat where Chhath Puja celebrations were being held."

The assessment of damages is currently underway.
