Assam: Medical seat quota for tea tribes approved by cabinet

GUWAHATI: Much to the relief of tea tribes community, the Assam cabinet has approved the reservation of seats in the medical colleges operated by the states for the students belong to the tea tribes community.

The cabinet took the decision to reserve as many as 24 MBBS seats and three BDS seats for the community which have been proportionally divided between the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barak valley, stated the Chief Minister Himanat Biswa Sarma. The tea garden community have been spread across over 800  major estates and small tea gardens.

Asa many as 18 seats have been reserved for the Brahmaputra Valley students of the community, six have been reserved for the Barak Valley. Likewise, two BDS seats are for the Brahmaputra Valley and one for the Barak Valley.

Among other important decisions, the Cabinet approved the conversion of a land allotment certificate to a periodic ‘patta’ (title deed to a property) within three years of allotment in the rural areas.

Assistance to priests and ‘namghorias’ will also be provided with an one-time grant of ₹15,000.

The Cabinet had also taken the decision to provide dry ration to migrant workers affected by COVID-19. Reportedly, the dry ration will be distributed by district officials. The data of the migrant workers are to be taken out from e-shram portal.
