Guwahati, December 17, 2019:

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday hinted at the involvement of a ‘leading academician’ and Congress workers for the vandalism that took place near the Dispur Secretariat during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Alleging the involvement of the rival Congress party in the conflict, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the investigation team has identified the prime accused in the vandalism to be "Zeherul Islam", who, according to Sarma, is a top leader of the Assam Youth Congress wing.

The Minister also mentioned that out of the 107 arrested accused, 50 per cent of them are from Barpeta and Goalpara -- districts in Lower Assam.

The Minister also hinted at the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deeper into the chaos that unfolded across the length an breadth of Assam after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Addressing the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma, “The instruction was given by a very leading academician of Assam through telephonic conversation to burn down the Janata Bhawan. However, the person is not known much to the public.”

Speaking on the lines of KMSS chief Akhil Gogoi’s incarceration, Biswa Sarma added that the things will be clear once the FIR copies on Akhil Gogoi are studied in the near future. Gogoi has been booked by the NIA under UAPA act.

Meanwhile, C(A)A protests continue unabated in several parts of the world amid increasing pressure on the Government to roll back the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Act.
