Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma receives first COVID-19 vaccine shot

GUWAHATI: Assam Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday took his first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) as the government rolled out its second phase of the drive.

 

"As people above 45 years with co-morbidities are eligible in phase 2, I took my first dose of

 

data-focusable="true">#COVID19Vaccine at GMCH today. All those under this category are advised to take their doses. Across Assam, our hospitals are geared up for speedy roll out of vaccination," Sarma informed on Twitter.

 

 

The Minister, who has been at the forefront of the fight against the dreaded pathogen, also uploaded some pictures in which he can be seen taking the jab.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday took the first dose of India’s homegrown coronavirus vaccine developed by biotechnology firm Bharat Biotech and Indian Council of Medical Research, Covaxin at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi.

 

PM Modi applauded the doctors and scientists on how in such a quick time they have worked to strengthen the global fight against the novel coronavirus infection.

 

The prime minister also urged all those who are eligible to follow suit.

“Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19. I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!” PM Modi tweeted after taking the Covaxin shot.

 

In view of the increasing number of infectious virus strains and an increase in cases, India yesterday started the vaccination programme to include people over 60 and those over 45 with co-morbidities across the country.
