Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Shown Black Flags on R-Day

Nagaon, January 26, 2020:

Continuing to rage against the BJP-led Government's contentious amendment of the Citizenship Act, activists of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Sunday as a mark of protest showed black flags to Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Nagaon, Assam.

Biswa Sarma had gone to Nagaon to hoist the tricolor flag at a Republic Day gathering. While returning, the Minister was shown black flags by members of the AJYCP, an indigenous organization vehemently opposed to the 'CAA'.

Earlier, in his address, Himanta Biswa, the fiercest supporter of the C(A)A in the echelons of power in Dispur, claimed that Assam has made significant strides ever since the BJP, along with its allies, the AGP and BPF, overthrew the long-running Congress rule in the Northeast Indian state. Biswa Sarma stated that the roads as well as bridges in Assam have seen significant improvements and infrastructure has been developed.

In the rally, Biswa Sarma also alleged that the recent protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act were led astray by Moulabadi (radical Islamic) elements. "They destroyed so much property at the Sankardev Kalashetra...what kind of a protest is that?", the Minister queried.

It may be mentioned here that Assam and the other Northeast Indian States continue to be in a state of upheaval since the passage of the CAA and thousands upon thousands poured onto the streets in rebellion. Presently, protests -- albeit peaceful ones -- are still being organized in many pockets of Assam (especially in Upper Assam) and a significant percentage of the population is still exhorting the Central Government to roll back the contentious 'CAA'.
