GUWAHATI: At a time when Assam's border conflicts with neighbouring states seem to be escalating, Union Home a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's departure from Northeast, the chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram have taken the row to Twitter.

Mizoram CM Zoramthanga earlier posted a video on Twitter where a mob was seen attacking police forces with sticks at the disputed site, in the area bordering Kolasib district of Mizoram and Cachar district of Assam.

"Shri @AmitShah ji kindly look into the matter. This needs to be stopped right now. #MizoramAssamBorderTension," wrote Zoramthanga along with the video tagging Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, office of Prime Minister and Home Minister as well as Cachar unit of Assam and Cachar Deputy Commissioner in it.

On the other hand, Assam CM Sarma without waiting for a minute responded to CM Zoramthanga, "Honble Zoramthanga ji could you please investigate why are civilians from Mizoram holding sticks and trying to incite violence?"

"We urge civilians to not take up law and order on their own hands and permit peaceful dialogue to take place between governments," Sarma added.

Right after, in another tweet, CM Sarma also said that the SP of Kolasib has asked the Assam security forces to withdraw from their post, adding that Mizo civilians neither will listen nor stop violence otherwise.

"How can we run government in such circumstances? Hope you will intervene at the earliest," Sarma added, tagging Shah.

Assam and Mizoram share an approximately 164.6 km long inter-state border. The matter of border tension between the states has been a long due unresolved issue.

Assam police have asserted last week that they have been camping at two locations along the inter-state border with Mizoram.

Union minister Amit Shah has addressed an all-northeastern CMs meeting in Shillong on July 24 last regarding the border tension among the states.

Earlier, the Assam government team that visited the police camping area was reportedly attacked by an improvised explosive device (IED) on July 10.

According to the data revealed by Assam Government, there were a total of 290 cases of encroachment in Assam since 2016 by neighbouring states, out of which, Mizoram is responsible for 42 encroachment cases in Cachar (25), Hailakandi (16), and Karimganj (1) districts.

Mizoram has also allegedly occupied 1777.58 hectares of Assam's lands in the districts of Hailakandi (1000.00), Karimganj (377.58), and Cachar (400.00), according to the Assam Home Ministry data.
