Assam: Former MLA accused of violating COVID norms in Jorhat with 'football distribution'

GUWAHATI: FORMER Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi come under fire from Jorhat locals for allegedly distributing football without following any of the COVID-19 protocols.

Dilip Kumar Bordoloi, a local Raijor Dal representative, has "condemned" the BJP leader for allegedly distributing footballs in 3 different places involving at least 500 youths of the area at a time when the COVID-19 cases are rising rapidly in the district which has been put under 'total containment.'

Bordoloi said that none of the COVID-19 protocols were followed during these meets and claimed that such conduct downplays the threat posed by the COVID-19. Pictures that have emerged from the event have apparently

"For two months, people have been confined in their homes. Even when venturing out to buy medicines, they have to do so with fear in their hearts. At the same time, In such a situation, a former MLA who recently joined the BJP has again selfishly done things to downplay the threat posed by the virus," he said.

The Raijor Dal leader has asked the local administration to look into the matter failing which the party will take a "constitutional step" against the former MLA.

After resigning from the Congress and the Mariani assembly seat, four-time legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the BJP in a ceremony.

Kurmi, a prominent leader from the tea tribe community who has represented the Mariani constituency in upper Assam since 2006, joined the ruling party in a function at Gerukamuch in Dhemaji district.

Kurmi told reporters that younger leaders like him had been sidelined in the Congress, and that the party’s central leadership was responsible for its repeated electoral failures across the country.

In the elections to the 126-member Assam Assembly in March, the NDA won 75 seats while the Congress-led “grand alliance” — which included the AIUDF — bagged 50.
