Assam MLAs Stage Protest against CAB, NRC in Assembly Premises

Guwahati, November 28, 2019:

The first day of the winter session of Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed Bedlam as opposition parties Congress, and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), staged a protest within the Assembly

It may be mentioned here that MLAs from the two opposition parties held a protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Demanding the Speaker to cancel the 'Question Hour' and hold a discussion on the Citizenship Bill and the NRC instead, the MLAs staged a walkout from the Assembly session.

Subsequently, many of the MLAs were witnessed holding aloft placards like ‘Stop scrapping of NRC’, ‘Follow the Assam Accord’, ‘CAB is against the constitution’, etc. They also raised the voices, shouting slogans against the ruling BJP Government.

It is reported that the first day of the session will have government business beginning with the Oath of Affirmation by newly elected members which will be followed by Question Hour.

It may be mentioned here that the NRC, the final draft of which was published on August 31, has left over nineteen lakh people 'stateless', with a quest to now prove their citizenship now a must. The Citizenship Bill issue, meanwhile, continues to stoke the fires of controversy across the country. In the Northeast, the student organizations and student bodies have been staging sustained protests against the Bill.
