Assam: Muslim man organizes Durga Puja every year; sets example of communal harmony

UDALGURI: Amid the communal conflicts taking a toll on the society, a man in Udalguri district of Assam is setting an example of how one's religion cannot act as a barrier in doing something for the welfare of the society.

Matiur Rahman, a resident of Mazbat, has been the back bone behind a Durga Puja committee in the area since its inception in 2010.

Rahman's story has been garnering accolades after a former Assam Govt personnel PK Bhagawati tweeted about him.

"I just came to know that the president of a Puja Committee in Mazbat is Maitur Rehman. Not just this year but since many years", Bhagawati tweeted.

Speaking further to InsideNE, Bhagawati said, "In a time like this when almost everything takes a communal turn and , it makes me extremely happy to see that someone like Matiur, a Muslim man has dedicated himself in Durga Puja celebrations.

"What makes me happier is that, he is still doing it. He has been associated with it since more than a decade", he added.

The puja has been mandap has been set up in front of Ziaur Rahman's hous. Matiyur Rehman is the brother of renowned tiger hunter and environmentalist Ziahur Rahman, informed Bhagawati hails from Mazbat. The puja has been mandap has been set up in front of Ziaur Rahman's house.

"I have been attending puja at that mandap since many years. But I never knew that the man behind it was Matiur Rahman", he Bhagawati.

Bhagawati further informed that one Rima Kujur, a Christian, is also a part of the committee.

Tales like such emerge as a ray of positivity illuminating the society and awakening it from the slumber of communalism.
