Assam: Nalbari Streets Echoed with AASU’s ‘Bajra Ninad’ Protest against C(A)A

Nalbari, December 20, 2019:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) took out a ‘Bajra Ninad’ protest rally today in Nalbari district of Assam to oppose the implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act in the state.

Protesters came out chanting slogans against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led government and the leaders of the state, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health & Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

People of Nalbari, from all walks of life, assembled in the ‘Bajra Ninad’ protest against the C(A)A. Members of Nalbari Business’ Association, Journalists’ Association, Nalbari Press Club, Nalbari Sahitya Sabha, District Sahitya Sanmilani, Assam College Teachers’ Union, Nalbari Artistes’ Fraternity, Pensioners’ Union and many more participated in the ‘Bajra Ninad’ protest held under the banner of the AASU on Friday.

One of the protesters, General Secretary of Hari Naamghar (Prayer hall), said, “The CAA is against the indigenous people of Assam. This act would lead to thousands of people coming to Assam. There will be an increase in the population of other cultural indigenous groups, thereby marginalizing the Assamese people.” He further added that Nalbari held no record of burning cars or damaging public property.

“We lead peaceful protests. We don’t jeopardize our own places.To the people who claim that Nalbari does not understand CAA, let me tell you that people of Nalbari are No. 1 in education. We are well acquainted with the CAA and that is why we have participated in this protest,” added the GS.

The Nalbari ‘Bajra Ninad’ witnessed the participation of students, teachers, intellectuals and social workers. It may be mentioned here that the BJP leaders had held a ‘Peace & Prosperity’ march in Nalbari at the same time with an aim to establish that Assam people would walk towards development in the state. It was led by Assam CM Sonowal and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
