GUWAHATI: A Guwahati based NGO in Assam, The FERNS Society, planted over 300 saplings in Guwahati  on the 5th of June, on the occasion of World Environment Day.

More than fifty saplings were planted in the Shankardev Nagar village of Maligaon, This is the same place which hosts the annual Adingiri Theatre Festival. This picturesque location is home to innumerable varieties of birds and small animals.

It also gives a very rustic and natural feeling to the festival. "We want to plant more trees so that the generations to come know the value of pristine landscapes within the city. There is nothing as soothing as the sound of birds while sitting in the comfortable shadow of tall trees." This is what Mr. Manabendra Choudhury, the organizer of the Adingiri Theatre Festival had to say about the initiative.

More than 200 more saplings were than panted across various locations in the Adingiri village in Maligaon. The saplings planted included agar, mangoes , lemon, Indian gooseberry, Spanish cherry, areca palm, night flowering jasmine, etc

Apart from the plantation initiative, The FERNS Society also undertook sapling distributions in the city. Nearly 50 saplings were given to Central Industrial Security Force stationed for the safety of Guwahati Refinery. Few saplings were also given to the State Bank of India for plantation.

Everything was done adhering to the COVID protocols implemented by the government of Assam.

Few days back the NGO had started a campaign with Guwahati Foodie in order to encourage people to plant more trees at their own homes or nearby locations. The goal was to encourage people to plant a total of about 1,20,000 and upload pictures on social media. This campaign was named the #120KSaplings by The FERNS Society. Since the distribution of the saplings is difficult in these times of the lockdown, we decided to lead by example. Instead of concentrating on the number, we decided to plant trees ourselves by following all COVID protocols.

Last year this NGO distributed saplings to all on duty police personnel in the city on the occasion of Environment Day.
