Guwahati, May 22, 2019:

The Assam State Unit of the National People's Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the dastardly act of the militants who gunned down NPP MLA Tirong Aboh yesterday afternoon at Bogapani in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap district.

The Assam state Convenor of the Party Dilip Bora while condemning the dastardly act demanded strong and purposeful action by both the Central and State Governments against the perpetrators of the "inhuman" act. Expressing deep sorrow, he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the kith and kin of the deceased party mate and prayed for 'eternal peace of all the departed souls'.

Aboh was the sitting NPP MLA from Khonsa West assembly constituency and was seeking re-election from Khonsa West assembly seat.

Sources said that the MLA and his family were travelling in an SUV from Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district to Khonsa when the incident took place. According to reports, Aboh and his younger son died on the spot.

It may be mentioned that the MLA had earlier been threatened by separatist group Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isaak Muivah) (NSCN-IM).

Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K Sangma has confirmed the attack and took to micro-blogging site Twitter to condemn the “brutal” attack on his partymate. He also appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Home Minister Rajnath Singh to take “action” against the criminals.

Sangma wrote: “The NPP is extremely shocked and saddened by the news of the death of its MLA Shri Tirong Aboh (Arunachal Pradesh) and his family. We condemn the brutal attack and urge @rajnathsingh and @PMOIndia to take action against those responsible for such attack,” Sangma further tweeted.

The election was held in the two Constituencies of Arunachal — Arunachal East and West — during first phase of elections on April 11. The counting will be held on Thursday, May 23.
