GUWAHATI: Krishanu Baruah, a former student of the J B College who finished his post-graduation in Mass Communication from Dibrugarh University, was today appointed the President of the Congress students’ wing National Student Union of India (NSUI). In a candid chat with Inside Northeast, the student leader revealed how the NSUI and the Congress can return to power once again. Here are some excerpts from our interview with Krishanu Baruah:

First of all, congratulations. As President of the NSUI, what will be your agenda?

Our goal will be to take the NSUI forward, for which we will need the cooperation of all the members. The students' concerns will be our concerns, the students' problems will be our problems. We wish to take them forward in all spheres -- be it culture, sports, or academics.

Tell us about your journey -- from student to student leader.

I first contested elections at the Dibrugarh University for the post of General Secretary. Although, I did not become the GS, I was made a member of the core committee. Now, I am serving as the Jorhat district President and this has come as a pleasant surprise. Happy to serve!

Tell us about the process -- how does one become the leader of one of the biggest student bodies?

On September 12, 4 NSUI leaders were called to New Delhi for an interview. The decision was announced today. I am indeed grateful for this opportunity.

How does one revive the Congress party in Assam? The party has been performing poorly in elections...

When a house is hit by wind and storms, we strengthen the foundations. We too are planning to strengthen the party from the grassroots so that we can overthrow the BJP rule.

How will the Congress fare in the 2021 Assembly polls in Assam?

Hopefully, good. We are hopeful that a non-BJP Government will come to power in 2021 that works for the well-being of all citizens, including students. For that, we are willing to put in the requisite efforts.
