MARIANI: Even as Nagaland police personnel refused to shift a makeshift camp set up on disputed land in the protected Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest under Mariani Range, Assam locals decided to once again resume the economic blockade against the neighbouring state.

Over the past week, several indigenous organizations in Assam have blocked the road leading to Mokokchung at New Sonowal against alleged Naga incursions on Assamese soil. Vehicular movement, of any kind towards Mokokchung district in the state, was halted in Sonowal. The blockade began on November 16, reports said.

The blockade was temporarily withdrawn after leaders of several organizations has decided to withdraw the agitation in view of the deputy commissioner and SP level meeting of Jorhat and Mokokchung districts scheduled to be held on Wednesday at Jorhat.

According to a Mokokchung police source, civil organizations in Mariani misconstrued the construction of a temporary COVID-related shelter by the Mokokchung district administration in the border village of Aosenden bordering Nagachari on the Assam side. It happened some 2-3 weeks back. Nagaland and Assam share a 512 km boundary and a land dispute that’s going on for over five decades.

The Jorhat administration, along with the Assam Police (AP), reacted with confiscating the construction materials. The Assam authorities have also set up a camp to monitor the activity of the Nagaland officials posted at the border.
