Assam: PDCK chief Songbijit to lay down arms in front of Amit Shah on Feb 25

GUWAHATI: I K Songbijit, the People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) chief, will lay down arms in front of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on February 25, reports said.

 

According to reports, Songbijit is currently in the Karbi Anglong district headquarter Diphu and will lay down arms during Amit Shah's next visit to the state on February 25.

 

Earlier, the rebel leader held meetings with Karbi Anglong Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, who has been acting as a mediator in the peace process.

 

This development has been reported days after reports surfaced that the insurgent had left Myanmar to engage in peace talks with the Indian government.

 

If rumours are to be believed, the insurgent leader is mulling to contest the ensuing polls in Assam.

 

People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) and six other outlawed outfits will lay down arms during Union home minister Amit Shah‘s visit to Karbi Anglong district of Assam on February 25.

 

The PDCK has also declared a unilateral ceasefire since yesterday in the run-up to the surrender ceremony.

 

In a statement, PDCK chairman JK Lijang declared the “unilateral cessation of hostilities to give impetus to resolving the vexed political conflicts among all stakeholders”.

He hoped the Centre would respond with “seriousness and sincerity” to arrive at an amicable political situation.

 

“We also seek grant of general amnesty from all criminal charges and compensatory financial grant for their rehabilitation in society,” Lijang stated. Laying down of arms by Dima Halam Daogah (DHD) and Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tigers (KPLT) will put an end to insurgency in the three hill districts of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.

 

The PDCK has, in the meantime, submitted a memorandum to Shah demanding an autonomous state for the Karbi tribal community. It claimed that it is only “viable solution” for harmonious coexistence between the hill tribes and the plain people.

 

It needs mention here that Shah during his upcoming visit will also head out to the Batadrava Than in Nagaon, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, and will lay the foundation of  Batadrava Than.
