"The per capita income of Assam was only Rs. 13,000 and when he left his post as CM, the per capita income was Rs. 48,000," Gogoi's aide told us, adding, "he left money in the Reserve Bank for the next administration and left Rs. 1,200 crore in a developmental fund and gave an amount to the next Government."

Gogoi, who joined up with the ex-CM in June of 2001, says that the veteran had always wanted to work for the upliftment of people and worked with "commitment and dedication."

He also said that the ex-CM chose the timing of 12:30 PM for his press conferences so that people could have their lunch at a favourable time. "I know there are many theories about the timing, but he (Tarun Gogoi) chose that timing because he wanted to then be able to go for lunch, and also, the attendees could also go for lunch in the late afternoon."

"He was positively a secular-minded person who respected all the religious. He never allowed any difference among religions, languages, castes, and communities. With the gamusa that he was presented, he wiped the tears of the people," the man added.

Three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who had been undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for post-Covid complications, passed away yesterday, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed. The Congress veteran was 86.
