Assam: Petrol price crosses Rs 100 mark; Guwahatians react

GUWAHATI: The petrol price in Guwahati has crossed the mark of Rs 100 which has triggered outrage from the public as well.

After a surge of Rs 0. 79 per litre, the price of petrol stands at Rs 100.11

now in the city.

Altas, who works as a delivery agent of an online food delivery platform, said,"Our service depends on mobility. I have to take my motorbike daily for the job and this frequent surge in prices has made it difficult to save money for ourselves. I have to look after my parents and two school-going siblings solely. It's getting harder day after day."

"Prices are going up daily but my income remains the same," Altas added.

The recent increase in prices of the fuel is the 10th hike this week all across India, while the prices have been hiked 13 times already since September 24.

Lakshmi, a homemaker, said, "Hike in fuel price means a hike in the price of every other good. Not only petrol but LPG cylinder's price hiked prior to that. It has affected my home budget too. As a result of COVID-19 and lockdown adversity, our business is not doing well as earlier either. Amid that price, the hike is worrisome for people like us."

Bireswar Kumar Gupta, a small businessman, felt price hikes would’ve been okay had his source of income surged simultaneously. He added,"Now I have to quit my motorcycle and take a bicycle to carry items for my shop. Otherwise, there will be no profit left from whatever I sell."

An auto-rickshaw driver said, "Around two-three years back I used to fill just Rs 200-300 of petrol for the day. Now I need Rs 600-700 per day for petrol whereas the fare remains almost the same."

"I have a family of six members. Only I am the bread earner. During the last lockdown, we received a few government aids. This year we did not even get that. Only three of my family members' names are included in our ration card. I requested many times yet could not renew my card yet. You can imagine my condition," he added.

Earlier, the price of the LPG cylinders had been raised by Rs 25 for the second time in one month on September 1. Prior to that, the price of the LPG cylinders was hiked by Rs 25 on August 17.
