GUWAHATI: The Assam Police has constituted a five-member committee of officers to “take immediate and pro-active steps to identify the intermediaries, facilitators and collaborators facilitating the infiltration of illegal migrants”.

The committee, headed by Kokrajhar-based 7th Assam Police Battalion commandant Subhrajyoti Borah as chairman, comprises Lakhipur subdivisional police officer Partha Protim Das, DSP of Special Branch headquarters Kakoli Banya Baruah, DSP (CID) Sukanya Das and DSP (Border) Rukma Buragohain.

The decision to form the panel was taken in a meeting at the chief secretary’s office here on January 11.

An undated order, signed by special director general of police (Border) Mukesh Agrawal, said the committee will “initiate legal action to bring them (intermediaries, facilitators and collaborators) to justice”.

“Deputy Commissioner of Police (Border), Guwahati, Superintendent of Police (Border) of all districts, Superintendent of Railway Police (Border), Pandu, Guwahati, and Superintendent of Police (RPO), Assam would take legal action in their respective jurisdictions on the recommendation of the Committee wherever required. They would also render necessary assistance to the Committee in performing its task including utilisation of Border Staff of the districts as and when required by the Committee,” the order added.

The deputy inspectors general of police (ranges) would supervise the progress and activities of the committee and follow-up action taken in their respective jurisdictions. The Guwahati police commissioner and inspector general of police (BTAD) would also act in similar capacity.
