Guwahati, September 10, 2019:

An Assam Police personnel on Monday reportedly failed to recognize Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while he was on a visit to Guwahati. He had come to attend the 4th Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), which was being attended by all Northeast Indian leaders.

While informing the gathering about the Northeast Indian people's need for respect, he said, "I got into a fight as I was not allowed to enter a bathroom. A police officer was standing there. However, these are some small things which matter to us."

With this statement, Sangma apparently took a backhanded jibe at the Police officer who had refused to let him use a bathroom due to a failure to recognize him.

Sangma spoke eloquently about the Northeast's desire for respect. "Whether work is being done or not, we desire respect above everything else", he said at one point, during his speech.

Bringing up the example of the disrespectful policeman during such a juncture, shows that the firebrand leader was not completely pleased with the way he was treated.

Although the Assam Police is keeping abreast of the changing times, with its humorous tweets on Twitter and Facebook, their disrespect towards guests (albeit unknowingly) leaves one bewildered.

Moreover, this comes at a time when the Police are launching several initiatives towards adopting a 'people-friendly' approach. Recently, the Assam Police flagged off an initiative to sensitize personnel for 'child-friendly' practices.
