Guwahati, February 6, 2020:

Assam police on Wednesday foiled an attempt by the anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom to trigger major explosions in Guwahati after it recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the capital city of Assam. The explosives were to be triggered on Thursday, one day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state, reports said.

The IEDs have been recovered from Pan Bazar and Paltan Bazar areas in Guwahati around 10:30 pm on the basis of a confession made by a captured militant of the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), who was arrested in Tinsukia on Wednesday.

Top officials of Assam Police and other security agencies rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said two IEDs were recovered and a bomb disposal team was called to defuse the IEDs. The top cop also confirmed that the explosives were packed in bags.

Earlier in the day, 3 IEDs were reportedly recovered in Chaygaon in Assam's Kamrup district, around 45 kms away from Guwahati.

"We recovered 5 units of what appeared to be handmade explosives from Chaygaon. The explosives were diffused by our bomb experts, and the residue is being sent for examination", said Rupam Hazarika, the OC of Chaygaon Police Station, told Inside Northeast.
