Assam police on encounter spree: 17th ‘criminal’ shot dead

DARRANG: Continuing its encounter spree, Assam police has shot dead a criminal in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as one Ashababu Ali.

He was shot dead in Dhanshirighar area of Dalgaon area.

With this, the number of people killed in police encounter has risen to 17 since Himanta Biswa Sarma took charge as the Assam CM on May 10.

Ali was one of the prime accused of the murder of an advocate in the adjoining Mangaldai district. According to the Police, Ali was taken to the crime scene at around 2 in the midnight.

Police said Ali was shot at while he tried to flee from police custody.

Ali was first arrested from Kharupetia area and then was taken to the crime scene.

Talking to InsideNE, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Superintendent of Police of Darrang district said, “Ali was one of the prime accused in the murder case of senior High Court lawyer Binay Kumar Ghosh in Mangaldai. Ali was also associated with several crimes in Kerala as well.”

He said that as many as 10 cases were registered against him in Mangaladai district including murder, robbery, dacoity etc.

Notably four days back, Assam police shot dead another criminal in Nagaon district while trying to escape arrest.
