Assam police to take strict measures to curb illegal arms menace in BTAD

The Assam police is all set to take strict measures to curb the illegal arms menace in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD) areas. Addressing a press conference after resuming duties on Tuesday, Director General of Assam Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said his department including the Crime Investigation Department (CID) will now take stringent measures to tackle the illegal arms problem in the BTAD.

The DGP also said that the Assam police has constituted a special narcotics cell to tackle the smuggling of drugs in the state. On the other hand, Mahanta informed that the police has filed its charge sheet in the infamous murder case of Rituparna Pegu and Sanatan Deka.

Rituparna Pegu was mercilessly beaten to death in Narengi area of Guwahati while Sanatan Deka was killed by a mob in Hajo during the lockdown period.

Noonmati police had arrested five accused in the brutal murder of Rituparna Pegu. The arrested were identified as Dulal Ali, Ibrahim Ali, Manowara Khatun, Hussain Ali and Arman Ali. Among them, Arman Ali is the owner of the shop where Rituparna Pegu was killed and Hussain Ali is an employee of the store. A case 294/20 had been registered against the five accused with the Noonmati Police Station under section 147/148/149/302 of the IPC. Rituparna Pegu, a resident of Commerce area of Guwahati, was stabbed to death in broad daylight. The incident took place at a store called Armand Home Furnishing, situated in Noonmati area of the city. The entire incident was recorded in the CCTV of the store and the arrest was made on the basis of the CCTV footage.

On the other hand, Sanatan Deka, a vegetable vendor was allegedly beaten to death by five men after his bicycle hit their car. The incident took place at Monahkuchi village under Kamrup district. The victim was riding his bicycle when he accidentally hit a car driven by Jalil Ali.

Soon after the incident, Jalil Ali and his friend Sabir Ali engaged in an argument with Deka While arguing, another three persons joined a few minutes later and started beating Deka. Deka was brutally beaten by the team of five members and before the locals reached the spot, they fled away. Deka was later rushed to the hospital in a serious condition and died in the hospital. A local resident said that the incident happened while Sanatan Deka was returning to his home after selling vegetables.
