Assam polls 2021: 76.92% voter turnout in Phase-I

GUWAHATI: Assam reported 76.92 percent voter turnout in the first phase of the 2021 Assembly election, the Chief Electoral Officer stated, adding that it might increase a bit after the final compilation.

"The first phase of Assam and West Bengal Assembly Elections was conducted successfully across 21825 Polling Stations spread over 77 Assembly Constituencies today," the Commission said in a release issued moments earlier.

Voting was held in 47 Assembly Constituencies of Assam with a total of 81lakh electorates registered across 11,537 Polling Stations. The number of Polling Stations has increased in view of the fact that the number of voters per polling station has been reduced from 1500 to 1000 keeping social distancing norms in view.

All the Polling Stations were directed to follow COVID-19 Safety protocols. Accordingly, it was ensured that the Polling Stations were sanitized one day prior to poll and facility of thermal scanning, hand sanitisers, face masks were also made available at the Polling Stations.

During this phase, 11,537 Ballot Units (BUs), 11,537 Control Units (CUs), and 11,537 VVPATs were used in Assam.

The BJP is contesting 39 of 47 seats in the first phase of polling and ally AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) 10. The two parties will go head-to-head in a "friendly contest" in two seats. The Congress will contest 43 Seats, while AIDUF of Badruddin Ajmal, the RJD, the AGM, and the CPIML will contest one each.
