GUWAHATI: The first phase of the biggest festival of democracy, the Assam Assembly Election, will be held today.

Voting will take place in 47 Assembly constituencies in 12 districts of the state. Polling will begin at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm.

In this phase as many as 37 incumbent Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) are competing again, including 24 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 6 each from Congress and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and one from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Total 81,09,815 voters will decide the fate of 264 candidates, including 78 independents and 23 women, from across various parties and political affiliations who are in the fray.

Out of total 81,09,815 voters, 40,77,210 are male voters, 40,32,481 female, and 124 third gender voters.

Polling will get under way at 11,537 polling stations in the 47 constituencies.

Meanwhile, due to the coronavirus pandemic, polling time has been extended by an hour till 6 pm.
