GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has filed his nomination for the Majuli Assembly Constituency today.

 

CM Sonowal will contest from Majuli for the second consecutive time.

 

The chief minister has filed his papers at the Majuli district collector’s office on the last day of submitting nominations before Majuli Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi in the presence of state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and AGP president, Atul Bora.

After submitting his nomination papers, the CM took to Twitter where he wrote, “I sought blessings and best wishes from all the people of Assam on the occasion of filing of nomination papers in Majuli. Your blessings are my source of endless inspiration."

 

Former Congress minister Rajib Lochan Pegu, who represented Majuli for three consecutive terms since 2001 but lost to Sonowal by 18,923 votes in 2016, will be his main opponent.

 

Elections to the 126-member assembly are scheduled to be held from March 27 in three phases.

 

The first phase of the polls will be held on March 27, while the second and third phases will be held on April 1 and April 6, respectively. Majuli will go to the polls in the first phase on March 27.
