Assam : Power theft cases to be registered in all police stations, informs DGP

GUWAHATI: Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Friday informed that the cases of power theft will be lodged in all the police stations which will be then followed by investigation like other cases.

The decision has been taken to prevent the rapidly increasing electricity bill defaulting and power theft.

He said that the Chief Minister has also taken the initiative to ensure power supply for all.

He then added that stealing electricity from others will do no good to society.

"We don't like to do this, hence we need your cooperation", said the DGP urging people to cooperate.

He further said that the maximum amount of dues have to collect from Jagiroad paper mill.

Talking about power theft, Rakesh Kumar, APDCL said ."any such act will invite legal action. He urged people to spread the word and also urged the customers to pay their dues to ensure interrupted electricity.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has also taken up the initiative to collect the dues from the customers

Asa many as 611 FIRs have been registered of which the maximum numbers of FIRs are from Mangaladai, Lakhimpur and Nagaon.

Kumar further informed a total of Rs 511 crores have been collected without subsidy.

He further appealed to everyone to pay their dues so that electricity can be provided to them 24*7.

In the month of June only Rs 1, 11,000 was paid while the total amount to be paid was 84 crores.

For commercial electricity, smart metres will be set up so that the units can be calculated automatically.

"We will have to develop the infrastructure to ensure 24*7 electricity in the rural areas and for that, we will need the money that is yet to be paid, added Kumar
