Assam receives 1 lakh more doses of Covishield for people above 45 yrs

GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the state has received one lakh more doses of Covishield from Serum Institute of India to inoculate people above 45 years of age.

Sarma stated that the state’s total vaccine availability currently stands at 3,25,470.

The minister also urged the people to get themselves tested for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, vaccination for the people in the 18 to 44 age group began in Assam yesterday, after a four-day delay.

Around 100 journalists below 45 years of age besides a few 'specially abled' youths were administered the COVID-19 vaccine on the launching day.

The ceremonious beginning was limited to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) and Gauhati Press Club (GPC) yesterday but the drive to vaccinate the 18+ category would be initiated in full swing from May 7.

Assam recorded 55 more deaths due to COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, taking the death toll in the state to 1,485, while 4,826 fresh positive cases took the tally to 2,72,751.

The state currently has 29,915 active COVID-19 cases.

During the day, 2,916 people recovered from the disease taking the total number of recoveries to 2,40,004.

On the other hand, a total of 27,84,428 people have received the COVID-19 vaccine so far in the state.
