Assam records highest single-day spike of 5,756 COVID-19 cases; 50 deaths in past 24 hours

GUWAHATI: Assam’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,89,069 as the state reported this year’s highest single-day spike of 5,756 fresh cases.

On the other hand, the COVID-19 death toll went up to 1,628 as the state witnessed 50 new COVID-19 deaths over the past 24 hours. The death rate now stands at 0.56 per cent.

The active caseload in the state currently stands at 36,799.

A total of 3,053 patients recovered from the disease during the period, taking the total number of recoveries to 2,49,295, with an recovery rate of 86.24 per cent.

Kamrup (M) district recorded 1,543 new COVID-19 positive cases, while Kamrup reported 484 cases, followed by Dibrugarh 392 and Nagaon district 292 cases.

Of the new fatalities, 16 were reported from Kamrup (M), six from Kamrup, four each from Dibrugarh and Nalbari, two each from Barpeta, Cachar, Dhubri, Nagaon and Sonitpur, and one each from Baksa, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts respectively.

A total of 65,140 tests were conducted during the day with the positivity rate being 8.84 per cent.

The state has so far tested a total of 90,40,606 samples for COVID-19.

On the other hand, Assam has so far inoculated a total of 29,99,241 people.

Of them, 23,43,457 have received the first dose while 6,55,784 have received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, Assam today received 50,000 more doses of Covishield vaccine to inoculate people in the 18-44 age group.

The state’s total vaccine availability for the 18-44 age group currently stands at 1,66,709.

The COVID-19 vaccination drive for this age group started in the state yesterday.

A total of 34 inmates of Karimganj district jail have tested positive for COVID-19.

Of these, 24 inmates were found to be COVID-19 positive during a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) yesterday.

Earlier, six others had tested COVID-19 positive.

All the infected inmates are currently undergoing treatment at the jail.

Other 41 inmates of the jail have been kept in separate cells, away from the infected inmates.
