Assam: Rising COVID-19 spread in Guwahati affects hospitals as more than 60 health professionals tests positive

A host of medical professionals including senior Doctors have been affected by the COVID-19 on the line of duty. Dr P.K.Sharma, one of the most popular medical practitioner of Tinsukia, Assam is no more. He was admitted in AMC in critical condition. He was COVID-19 Positive.

Earlier, an Assoc Prof of Ophthalmology, GMCH, an asymptomatic COVID 19 patient under treatment at home, died before reaching hospital today due to respiratory distress.

As per inputs obtained by Inside Northeast from local sources, these are the doctors current found COVID-19 positive. They are:

Along with that there are other PG students who have been tested COVID-19 positive and over 30 plus staff of Dispur Polyclinic.

Inside Northeast spoke to Neil Bardoloi, Managing Director and HOD, Cardiology of Excelcare Hospitals who revealed that "25-30 cases in are there in his own hospital Excelcare". Bordoloi himself has been tested COVID-19 positive and still has been taking care of other COVID-19 patients.

As per local estimation, the cases of hospitals being infected has increased a lot with the rising cases in Guwahati and after the directive by the state government to keep 20% bed for COVID-19 patients. This has raised questions about the status of healthcare of the state as its main warriors, the doctors have been infected. Neil Bordoloi, however, responded by saying that, "there should be no panic to achieve victory against COVID-19".

Neil Bordoloi raised the risk of co-morbidities issue and how Corona affects those patients. "COVID-19 factor is there for co-morbidities and other diseases will be affected but one has to stay positive". As for the pseudo-scientific theories going about regarding the issue of corona being hoax, he responded by saying, "there is no scientific logic to it. Yes, some cases find come out positive and later negative, those discrepancies arise due to the Antigen vs the RT-PCR test. The most important thing to focus now is the self-discipline to beat the virus".

As more and more health-professionals get diagnosed with COVID-19 in Assam, the state faces a dual risk of the pandemic and compromising its defence capabilities. However, the doctors are trying their best so far. How long will they carry this is the key concern?
