Guwahati, January 2, 2019:

The Assam Sahitya Sabha have made their opposition to the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 very clear. The organization, along with other indigenous literary organizations of the state, had organized a sit-in protest on January 19, 2019 to protest the proposed Bill. Now, the Sabha has decided to take their opposition to the Bill one step further.

At the 10th Annual Special Session of the organization held in Raha, the members of the Sabha have unanimously decided to take legal action against the Government if the Bill is passed in the current Rajya Sabha session. If they fail in the legal procedure, the Sabha has decided to call a civil disobedience movement in the state.

The Assam Sahitya Sabha is one of the oldest (it was founded in December, 1917) and most influential literary organizations in the region.

It is to be mentioned that the Assam state Government, as well as the NDA Government at the Centre are hellbent on passing the Bill, which is likely to be tabled in the current session of the Rajya Sabha.
