Assam: Sok Divas observed in Hailakandi in memory of Dhemaji 2004 I-day blast

To mourn the tragic death of innocent children and other people killed in a bomb blast while attending the Independence Day celebration held in 2004 in Dhemaji, Sok Divas was observed today at the Janata Bhawan premises. Maninder Singh, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam administered the oath of Sok Divas among the officers and staff of Janata Bhawan. Through the oath, everyone pledged to stand firmly against all acts of terrorism and militant violence, while beholding the non-violent principles of the nation.

The national flag was flown half mast to mourn the death of innocents killed in a bomb blast while attending Independence Day celebrations at Dhemaji defying a boycott call by militants 16 years ago and also other victims of militant violence.

A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the children and other persons who lost their lives in extremist violence and the officers and staff took the pledge to work unitedly for peace and harmony and raise their voices in unison against all acts of militant and extremist violence. District Development Commissioner, Vikram Dev Sharma administered the pledge. Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem and other officials and employees were present on the occasion.13 people, mostly school children aged between 12 and 14 years, were killed and several others injured in a bomb blast triggered by ULFA at Dhemaji College ground where they had gathered for Independence Day celebrations in 2004.
