Sivsagar, December 8, 2019:

In the midst of the massive protests against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, a man from Sivsagar district of Assam has sacrificed his cushy Government job to take active part in the raging agitations.

Assam son Himangshu Gogoi, posted at the Indian Air Force (IAF), has reportedly quit his job. At a time when the job crunch is causing great distress to the youths of the nation, driving them to desperate measures, this Assam son has shown great sacrifice in taking voluntary retirement from service to take active participation in protests.

To register his protest against the Bill, Gogoi will cycle from Guwahati to Tinsukia and from Tinsukia to New Delhi, reports said.

The story of Assam has been fraught with sacrifices -- from Vir Lachit Borphukan to freedom fighter Kanaklata -- none were hesitant to lay down their lives out of love for the motherland. The story of modern Assam is also defined by the sacrifice of the 855 martyrs of the Assam Agitation, who took to the streets to drive out 'foreigners', never to return home.

In the modern times, the struggle against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is the closest Assam has gotten to the dark days of the agitation, and it has been marked by sacrifices, both small and big, by the people of the state. Gogoi's sacrifice, although seeming minuscule in the grander scheme of things, will be remembered as a small but significant drop in the ocean of protests against the Bill in Assam.
