Assam Steps up Vigilance in Dhubri & Kokrajhar Districts amid Rising COVID Cases in West Bengal

Guwahati, April 24, 2020:

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the Government of Assam has stepped up vigilance along the bordering areas Kokrajhar and Dhubri amid rising cases of the deadly virus in neighbouring West Bengal.

Sarma said that "pool testing" will be carried out in Dhubri district on April 26. Five samples, he said, will be tested at the same time, Sarma said. Sarma said that there is a need to give special emphasis on Dhubri and Kokrajhar amid rising number of cases in West Bengal.

Note: There are 456 COVID-19 cases and 15 deaths in West Bengal.

Till now, the cases in Dhubri continue to rise, Sarma said, adding that Golaghat has the most cases at 9. "However, all these cases were discovered within 2-3 days. However, in regards to Dhubri, the cases have been more spread out", Sarma said. The Minister further added that if "something alarming" is found in Dhubri, the tests will likely be conducted in Kokrajhar as well.

Sarma said that so far 35 cases have been detected in Assam, while 19 patients have been discharged. Tomorrow, one more patient will likely be discharged, Sarma added. There are 15 active cases of the COVID-19 in the state. So far, 6,459 people have been tested in Assam, Sarma said.

Sarma further informed that Rs 2,07,25,000 crore has been forwarded to 829 people suffering from serious ailments suffering from serious diseases. Each patient has been given a sum of Rs 25,000.

The Finance and Health Minister also announced that post-verification, 1.5 lakh Assamese people stranded in other states have been forwarded a sum of Rs 2,000 each under the Assam Cares initiative. 800 volunteers are taking part in this outreach programme, Sarma said.
