TAMULPUR: Over six students' bodies from Assam have condemned 'false allegations' by kins of an accused related to the witch-hunting incident, that took place on May 24 in Baksa district's Kumarkata area, against Officer-in-Charge of Kumarikata Nilabh Jyoti Nath, who is investigating the matter.

Speaking with the media OC Nath said, "We have arrested 17 people connected with the case where they have lynched a person on suspicion of witchcraft. To arrest the master-mind of this whole fiasco Kamala Basumatary, we have reached his house last night but he managed to escape taking advantage of darkness. Now his family members are saying he had taken cash and mobile phones them, broken their glasses, etc."

The leaders of various students' body organisations such as AASU, Gorkha Students' Union, AJYCP, Tea Tribe Students' Union, All BTC Minority Students' Union, Santhal Students' Union, etc, have come forward to stand with the police officer accused by the family members of the absconded mastermind of the witch-hunting Kamal Basumatary.

"Since officer Nilabh Jyoti has taken charge of this area, illegal activities are in control. He has started operations against not only drugs but gambling, liquor, human trafficking as well. Hence we do not believe in such allegations against him," said a Students' Body leader from AASU.

They added, "All allegations are self-made and imaginary by the family members. Based on their allegations a few media channels have also broadcasted and published the same news which was not right."

50-year-old Biren Boro had been brutally killed by a mob in Baksa's Kumarikata suspecting him of practicing witchcraft on May 24.
