Assam: Timber sawing machine, logs worth of Rs 4 lakhs seized in Kokrajhar

While Governor of Assam, who is now head of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Prof Jagdish Mukhi has been strong emphasizing for reforestation and voicing against the illegal timber smuggling in the BTAD region, deforestation and timber smuggling cases are seeing increase day by day in the region in several areas of Kokrajhar and Chirang districts in Assam.

 Continuing the search operations against the deforestation and timber smuggling, the forest department and anti- corruption & crime investigation front have seized  timber sawing Honda machines, smuggling patai timbers etc on Wednesday evening of which market value to be approximately Rs.4 lakhs.

 A joint team operation comprising of forest staff Jharbari Range, anti-corruption & crime investigation front, Bodoland environmental protection society have intensified strict search operation against the timber smuggling at Genduguri and Aouguri areas under Haltugaon forest division, Assam and able to seize smuggled timbers, sawing Honda machine, hand-pulled thelagari etc.

The seizures included five numbers of illegally used timber sawing Honda machines, four numbers of hand pulling thelagari,several numbers of over 60 pieces of patai timbers which were illegally used and smuggled by timber mafias in the deep forest region.

The seized material’s market value is approximately over INR 4 lakhs. The seized materials have been brought to Jharbari forest office, Assam.

“Even though forest and anti-corruption & crime investigation front have been stepping against the timber smuggling, yet smuggling as well as deforestation activities is not seeing come into end. Forest department will continue operations to make reforestation”, said a senior forest department official.
