Assam: Tribes intensify demand for creation of ‘Tirap Autonomous District Council’

MARGHERITA: The Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee (TADCDC) on Friday staged a road blockade at Longtong Tiniali in Margherita to protest against the BJP-led Government of Assam for not heeding the concerns of the tribals living in the Tirap elt.

Around 100 tribal activists, staging the road blockade programme, shouted various slogans against the BJP led Government of Assam.

Mungdung Gum Singpho, President of the Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee said that micro tribes such as Singpho, Sema, Tangsa, Khamti, and Man Tai speaking communities living in the Tirap belt under Margherita Sub Division are demanding the protection of their identity by immediately creating and a Tirap Autonomous Council under the provisions of the Article 244 (2) of the Constitution of India.

“We have several demands such as the Reservation of Margherita and Sadiya LAC to the tribal people, installation of tribal belts and block signboards, the implementation of a new land Policy for the aboriginal tribes of the Tirap tribal belt, Immediate implementation of Prevention SC/ST atrocity Act 1989, and the immediate exclusion of the Tribal Belt areas from the purview of Assam Panchayat Raj Act 1997. This is because the tribal people have their own traditional political institutions and village administration. We have also urged for the proper implementation of Chapter X Assam land and Revenue Regulation 1886 Act,” he further added.

A memorandum was given to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi through the SDO (C) of Margherita in this regard, Singpho added.
