Assam: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launches Rs. 2000 crore road project ahead of Shah visit

SILCHAR: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has reached Assam where he is announcing a major infra push ahead of the upcoming Assembly election in the State. Today, along with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be laying the foundation stone for the 27th Rashtriya Rajmarg Pariyojana (National Highways Projects) in Silchar on Friday. Interestingly, the project shall be flagged off merely a few months before Assam heads for the Assembly elections.

The foundation laying ceremony for the project called "Pragati Ka Highway" began at 1 PM today. Earlier in the morning, Assam CM Sonowal received Gadkari at the airport, and the duo headed off together towards a rally venue in Silchar, where Gadkari announced one of the most ambitious projects in Assam during the NDA Government's tenure.

The highway project is worth over Rs. 2,366 crores includes a total length of 439 kilometers.

According to reports, the project will include building bridges over Krishnai river to connect Meghalaya to the rest of India, strengthening the tourism and socio-economic conditions of the state as well as giving a boost to commercial activities in Mizoram.

Besides, it is expected to lead to ease in transporting patients and availing health services, generating employment, and self-employment opportunities in the entire Northeastern part.
