Assam University Unrest Comes to End with “Win-Win Situation”

Silchar, February 20, 2020:

The unrest at Assam University, Silchar came to an end with a win-win situation after nine days of continued sit-in protests staged by the students demanding the withdrawal of FIR against a research scholar Milon Das and revocation of his rustication.

Owing to situations not conducive in a university campus, the authorities conducted a meeting with all the stakeholders of Assam University.

Vice President, Assam University Teachers’ Association, Amalendu Chakraborty said, “We had a discussion with all the stakeholders of the University, students who were protesting, students who were not involved in the protests, teachers and everyone and we came to a conclusion that the University classes need to be resumed.”

He informed about two major developments in Assam University. Research Scholar Milon Das will be allowed to submit his thesis and appear in the examination if he gives a written undertaking of maintaining decorum. The students who were protesting and engaged in vandalism earlier, will refrain from repeating such behavior within the University campus and continue contributing towards a productive atmosphere.

The win-win situation was also welcomed the student bodies. “We are happy that all our demands have been met. Now we will not repeat any such protests.”
