Assam: UPPL writes to Centre, demands special trains for stranded migrants of BTR

The United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) has appealed to the Central government to facilitate the return of migrant workers hailing from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and other parts of Assam stranded in various parts of India due to nationwide lockdown in the wake of COVID-19 by arranging special trains. In this regard, the party on Friday dashed off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to the media persons, the UPPL president Pramod Boro informed that thousands of people of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and Assam are stranded in different parts of the country amid the lockdown enforced to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“Thousands of people from Assam are stranded in different parts of the country due to the lockdown. They have been continuously approaching us to bring back them. Since it is the inter-state matter, the intervention of the government is the only solution,” Boro said.

It is pertinent to be mention that the country has witnessed an exodus of migrant workers since the lockdown was enforced on March 25 initially for 21 days to prevent the spread of the lethal virus, which was later extended. The country is currently under the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown, which was enforced on May 18 with considerable relaxation.

The SARS virus has infected a total of 214 people and claimed four lives across Assam while infected over 1 lakh people and claimed over three thousand lives while around 50 thousand people have been cured or discharged so far in the country.
