DHUBRI: Durga idol designed out of waste materials, to create environmental awareness, the artist from Dhubri fabricated a Durga Idol out of used LED bulbs, tubelights, CFL lights and chain lights.

Veteran artist, Pradip Kumar Ghosh who have been involved in exhibiting Durga Idol every year in a creative manner, from last 29 years.

Ghosh used over thousands of discarded lightening items to create the entire Durga Idol for the ensuing Puja. The idol being completed after working hard of four hours daily from last nine months in a row.

The veteran artist has been making eco-friendly environment friendly Durga Idols since 1992, to promote the reuse of waste products and eco-friendly items.

Each year the artist comes up with a new concept and theme of making the Durga Idol. Earlier, Ghosh, created such idol with sugarcane wastes, discarded cycle tubes, plastic bottles, coconut leaves, vegetables etc.

“Although the focus is always is on the plastic waste materials, glass too have a very high impact over the environment”, said Ghosh. He also added, “Glass bottles gets recycled, but there is no collector of bulbs, tubelights, LED's and CFL's to recycle it.

“Glass wastes are no less than plastic waste”, said the artist and added that “Awareness on environment, impact of waste materials on the environment and recycling of waste materials has become a need of the hour”.

Explaining the process of creating the idol the artist said that that he worked daily for four hours for nine month to create the life size idol “The toughest job is to find the right kind of bulbs or the tubelights to fit in to the idol, to create the idol ”, said Ghosh.
