Guwahati, October 30, 2019:

The Baha’i community of Assam organized a colourful and befitting programme in Guwahati to mark the bicentenary of the birth of The Bab, the Messenger of God, at Baha’i House at Khanapara in Guwahati on Tuesday.

The Báb, born Siyyid `Alí Muhammad Shírází was the founder of Bábism, and one of the central figures of the Bahá'í Faith. The Báb was a merchant from Shiraz in Qajar Iran who in 1844, at the age of twenty-four, claimed to be a messenger of God.

There are over 500 people from the community residing in Guwahati and other parts of Assam.

"Baha’is throughout the world are working together to build this new world order where lasting and durable peace will be established and all people will live as members of one global family," said Sebika Gogoi, who has embraced the Baha'i faith in 2001 and  is propagating the teachings of the Bab since then.

Gogoi said the principles of equality of rights between men and women, the harmony of science and religion, the establishment of an international language, a world government, are teachings of great relevance in this age, taught to the world through Baha’i faith, which has already achieved worldwide acclaim.

"Baha’i faith aims for the need of value-based education for children at the primary level - the education we impart to our children should enable them to do away with prejudices, " said Gogoi.

Shei said the Baha'i faith also focuses on equality of genders and the need to educate rural womenfolk. "The denial of equality between the sexes perpetrates an injustice against one-half of the world’s population and promotes in men harmful habits and attitudes that are carried from the family to the work place, to political life and ultimately to international relations, " she added.

A host of activities ranging from profound conversations, prayer and meditation to visits to the homes of friends and family and artistic expressions have been organised as part of the bicentenary celebrations.
