GUWAHATI: The COVID-19 situation in Assam is becoming a little alarming, said state's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today.

The minister after visiting Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) said, Assam have been reporting about 5000 cases of the novel Coronavirus, everyday, and with this the COVID situation in Assam becoming alarmaing, but we are prapared to to curb the pandemic.

The minister also said every week has been witnessing over 1,000-1,500 COVID-19 cases, and if things continue as they are, Guwahati might soon run out of ICU beds.

In the past 24 hours as many as 4,489 more people tested positive for COVID-19, pushing the tally in the state to 2,63,450.

Of the new cases, Kamrup (M) reported 1,645 cases, followed by Dibrugarh 460, Kamrup 239, Nagaon 201 and Nalbari 201.

The state recorded 29 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1,389.

Meanwhile, 2,534 people recovered from COVID-19 infection in Assam yesterday, taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 2,34,237.

The positivity rate now stands at 8.02 per cent.

The state currently has 26,477 active COVID-19 cases.
