GUWAHATI: Amid signs that the second wave of the COVID-19 might be nearing its end, Assam's health department has already begun preparations to boost infrastructure before the third wave of the pandemic hits.

Exuding confidence, state health minister Keshav Mahanta has said that the health department is ready to face even the stiffest of challenges in regard to COVID.

"We have been taking preemptive measures. In every area of Assam, we are keeping hospitals and COVID Care Centres. All districts have the capacity to admit anywhere between 500-1000 patients at any given moment. We are also setting up ICUs for the children and adolescents. We are taking all measures to prepare us for any eventuality," Mahanta told media persons.

So when is the third wave of COVID-19 coming? Sooner than one might think, it seems.

NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat recently said that India's epidemiologists have given very clear indications that the third wave of Covid-19 is inevitable, and it is likely to start from September-October. Therefore the country should vaccinate more and more people. He said, "I think we have done reasonably well. We have managed the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic very well, as a result, Covid-19 numbers have come down significantly.

"... we have been able to manage (the second wave Covid-19 ) with the help of our science and technology activities, creating oxygen banks, making large number of industries to support oxygen supply. Using railways, using airports, using the military for transporting liquid oxygen," news agency PTI quoted Saraswat as saying.
