Sivasagar, September 6, 2019:

Bakhor Bengena, Assam's oldest mystical tree, continues to stand strong, even after 584 years of existence.

Located in Bokota village in Sivasagar district of Assam, the tree is believed to be one of the oldest living trees on the planet. Locally known as Bakhor Bengena, this tree's scientific name is Tamilnadia Uliginosa.

It is believed to be planted by the famous Barahi king, Mahamanikya of Jayantipur. Bakhor Bengena is considered to be another striking historical landmark in Assam's 'Land of Kings', Sivasagar.

Interestingly, Bakhor Bengena has also made it to the Indian postal stamp. A stamp bearing an image of the iconic tree was released in 2018.

The tree stands as one of the key attractions in Sivasagar and is thronged by thousands of curious tourists each year. It is also believed that the Ahom kings had preserved this tree during their rule.

A few years ago, after realizing the uniqueness of this tree, the locals and the concerned authorities had built a boundary wall around the tree. A gate had also been built, along with, the information on Bakhor Bengena.

People of Assam believe that this beauty of nature should be given due attention and the government should take due measures for its care and preservation.
