GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced the state's journalists who have been working continuously at the forefront in the fight against the COVID pandemic as frontline workers.

As the state government would symbolically launch the COVID-19 vaccination drive for the 18-44 category from tomorrow, along with the people above the 18 to 45 age group, the journalists will also likely get vaccinated at the Guwahati Press Club tomorrow, said the state's health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Minister Sarma said Assam has received a fresh batch of 1.5 lakh doses of Covaxin from Bharat Biotech.

The state government will inform more regarding the vaccination drive soon, said minister Sarma.

Speaking to the media,  minister Sarma said that the COVID-19 situation of Assam is becoming alarming, but we are prepared to curb the pandemic.

The state government also revised the night curfew timings and preponed it by two hours.

The new night curfew time will now be 6 pm to 5 am every day with effect from tomorrow (May 5), and the shops and other business outlets would be closed at 2 pm as opposed to the earlier timing of 6 pm.

In the past 24 hours, as many as 4,489 more people tested positive for COVID-19, pushing the tally in the state to 2,63,450.

The state currently has 26,477 active COVID-19 cases, while the death toll stands at 1,389 with more 29 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the state in the last 24 hours.
