NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs in a letter on Monday asked the states to enforce localised restrictions and strict containment measures for at least 14 days to help in breaking the COVID-19 chain.

Ajay Bhalla, home secretary, stated in the letter that an "unprecedented surge" in COVID-19 cases had made it urgent for states/UTs to consider strict COVID management and control measures to bring the situation under control.

"...all States and UT Governments to implement an intensive,

local and focused containment framework, focused on specific districts/ cities/ areas, and identified based on a prescribed criterion," a part of the letter read.

It further added, "I would, therefore, urge you to issue directions to district authorities in your State/UT, to take all necessary measures, as advised by MoHFW in their letter, for the

implementation of the containment framework, so as to flatten the curve."

This might be the reason why Assam had also come up with a night curfew with immediate effect from 8 pm to 5 am till May 1st, a day before the counting of assembly polls. There is speculation that these restrictions will be enforced from May 3 again.

“After reviewing the state’s COVID situation it was observed that there has been a rapid increase in the number of active cases of COVID-19 across the State and therefore, it is felt that night curfew needs to be imposed in all the districts of Assam, except for essential and emergency activities/Services, as an emergency measure for well being and safety of the people,” the order issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority read.
