New Delhi, August 20, 2019:

External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar on Tuesday said that the process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) that documents and identifies illegal immigrants in Assam is India’s “internal matter”.

The statement was made during his two-day visit to Bangladesh after taking over the charge of External Affairs Minister. The remarks came up days after New Delhi voiced its concerns over the movement of illegal immigration from Bangladesh to the Northeast.

S Jaishankar held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart A K Abdul Momen on the issues like the Rohingya crisis and the long-pending pact on the Teesta water sharing.

Earlier, Home Minister Amit Shah also raised concerns over the illegal immigration from Bangladesh to the Northeast. The issue was addressed before Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at the 7th meeting of India-Bangladesh Home Minister Level Talks (HMLT) held in New Delhi.

The Minister's comments came merely days after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had lambasted the Narendra Modi-led BJP Govt in India of committing atrocities against minorities, in a sly jibe at the Assam NRC.
